We Can Do a Lot to Encourage Students to Read

The passion for reading can change a child and benefit the child for life. Needless to say the benefits of reading, but how do we let children fall in love with reading?

Reading is an integral part of the Primary School Curriculum in SIFC- not only is it taught explicitly through phonics and guided reading sessions, it is part of our every day learning journey where we read for both enjoyment and information.

In the Middle School and High School, we use the common core skills with real world texts. Using the standards to look at the different skills of reading. The CCR anchor standards and High School grade-specific standards work in tandem to define college and career readiness expectations—the former providing broad standards, the latter providing additional specificity.

In the survey report of reading SIFC did several days ago, we obtained the data like this:

74% of the students like reading

35% of the students read every day

78% of the students read actively

30% of the students read over one hour every day

87% of the students like to read at home

39% of the students say that their reading is influenced by their friends and media

30% of the students have a reading plan

 ……

22% of the parents read to their children

12% of the parents never read to their children

36% of the parents read every day
5% of the parents rarely read

53% of the parents have over 100 books at home

4% of the parents have fewer than 20 books at home

97% of the parents encourage their child to read extensively

63% of the parents remind their child to read

36% of the parents recommend books for their child

14% of the parents do not notice how many books their child read in one year

29% of the parents ask their child about his/her reading

70% of the parents think their child does not read well

……

It can be seen from the reading questionnaire that students' interest in reading is improving and their reading habits are gradually developed, but the reading environment of students is not 100% ideal.

To create a positive reading environment, actually we can do many things. Let's work together !

Create the spaces for reading

Parents can create proper reading environment for children to read. It is not necessary to put so much books, and you just need to set up an independent reading area that has appropriate lightness and quietness. In this way, children can completely enjoy the world of books.

The first step to stimulate children's interest in reading is buying books. The books are valuable assets of the family. There are many ways to buy books. You can visit the library and bookstore regularly, or you can search the books on the Internet for all ages.

Read at a set time

British reading expert Aiden Chambers believes that reading time is the prime factor affecting reading. Therefore, whether students are at school or home, there should be a fixed reading time every day so that they can concentrate on reading.

Reading, being a role model for children

Parents are the first teachers for their children, and their words and deeds will be imitated by their children. Modeling behaviors is more important than teaching them those orally. Parents need to use their own behavior to guide their children and plant seeds of love in children's minds. Then knowledge will grow in lush abundance.

Communication--- a language password

How can you have a common language with your child? It is a good idea to read a book with your child. Of course, the premise is that you are willing to walk into the spiritual world of your child and are willing to engage in spiritual communication with your child.

Read a book, discuss the storyline, theme, and characters in the book with your child, exchange each other's comments and doubts, feelings and gains... Some key words in the book will become the language password between the parents and the child. The fun and joy that others don't necessarily understand.

Choose the right book

If the content of the book is too abstract and goes beyond children’s understanding, parents should promptly change books for their children. It is very important to help your kids choose age-appropriate books on topics that interest them to spark a passion for reading.

We hope that this sharing will bring some new perspectives for parents to help their children read.
